You love your new little one in pieces and appreciate every milestone. From the moment you press your finger to the first smile, your baby makes you reach the camera and proudly share these moments with friends and family.

One thing you might not be so eager to share? How do you feel deprived of sleep.

We understand. You are in love. But you are also exhausted. And yes, it can be displayed. Resist the temptation to go crazy with Snapchat filters to correct this, at least superficially, and know you're not alone.

As much as we want to program our lives, during the first 6 months of life, babies have different ideas. They have sporadic sleep patterns that can be disconcerting and even change from week to week. They can sleep for up to 17 hours in one day, of course, but maybe only for 1-2 hours at a time in some cases. This can be daunting for new parents.

But keep in mind that your newborn still has a small stomach. They usually wake up at night because they are hungry. And like you, they are vocal when they need food. (And unlike you, they cannot serve themselves).

There is no set deadline for when your baby will sleep through the night, disappointing, right? - But it will happen. Some babies sleep through the night at 6 months, while others do not sleep until 1 year, but in any case, in the future there will be a more constant sleep for both you and the baby.

Every baby is different, so try not to compare your baby's sleeping habits with someone else's. (And never, never compare your selfie without a filter with a new father's Snapchat or Instagram photo. Fatherhood is beautiful, and so are you.)

We will deepen what can be expected.

"Sleep all night": what it is and what it is not
Experts generally believe that "sleeping through the night" means sleeping 6 to 9 hours at a time for children and adults. But for babies, sleeping through the night can mean that your child still needs to breastfeed or drink a bottle. Remember that small bellies often mean hunger, but then you can fall asleep again.

Therefore, the fact that you "sleep through the night" for 3 months does not necessarily mean that you are sleeping continuously. But it does mean that your child is receiving a quality closed eye to help him with his development and growth.

About two thirds of babies really sleep uninterruptedly, for those 6 to 9 hours of happiness, when they are 6 months old.

Ages 0–3 months: the “fourth quarter”
You were probably told that the pregnancy consists of three trimesters. So what is this about a room?

The fourth trimester, or period of the newborn, is the period of time in which your baby is between 0 and 3 months. It is known as the fourth trimester because your baby is adjusting to a time outside her womb, and sometimes, honestly, she misses you and wants to be back in it.

Some newborns have their days and nights confused, so they sleep during the day and are often awake at night. Their stomachs are small, so they need to eat every 2-3 hours. Your baby will usually make this need high and clear, but talk to your pediatrician.

In the first few weeks, you may need to wake your baby to feed him if he is not waking up alone at these intervals, especially if they have not yet returned to their birth weight.

There is also a lot of development during these months, so your sleepless nights will be paid with interest.

Breastfed babies vs. formula fed babies
Breastfed babies may have slightly different sleep schedules than babies fed with formula during this time. Breast milk tends to move through your baby's digestive system faster than the formula. So when you are breastfeeding, your baby may be hungry more often.

You may also need to breastfeed at least 8 to 12 times every 24 hours until the milk supply arrives during the first or second week. Then your baby may still need to breastfeed every 1.5 to 3 hours for the first 1 to 2 months, but you can sleep longer during the night.

Infants fed with formula may need a bottle every 2–3 hours. Talk to your baby's pediatrician for specific instructions on how often they will need to feed. And remember: the breast or formula, a fed baby is the best baby.
